Ahmed Abbasi is an information systems scholar and professor at the University of Notre Dame.[15] He holds the Joe and Jane Giovanini Professorship in IT, Analytics, and Operations at the Mendoza College of Business and serves as director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and deputy director of the university’s Data, AI, and Computing Initiative.[9,3] His fields of research and expertise encompass information systems, artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and business analytics. He has also been affiliated with the University of Arizona, Columbia University, and Virginia Tech.

Education

Abbasi earned a B.S. in Information Technology and Management Science and an M.B.A. with a concentration in Information Technology from Virginia Tech. He received an M.S. in Operations Research from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Information Systems, with a minor in cognitive science, from the University of Arizona's Artificial Intelligence Lab.[2,11] His doctoral adviser was Hsinchun Chen.[1]

Career

From 2004 to 2008, Abbasi was a research associate and project lead in the Artificial Intelligence Lab at the University of Arizona. He was an assistant professor of management information systems at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee from 2008 to 2011.[3] Abbasi joined the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia in 2011, where he later served as Murray Research Endowed Chair Professor of Information Technology and associate dean.[4] He also directed the Center for Business Analytics from 2013 to 2020.[5]
In 2020, Abbasi joined the University of Notre Dame as the Joe and Jane Giovanini Endowed Chair Professor in the Department of IT, Analytics, and Operations at the Mendoza College of Business.[7] He became co-director of the Human-centered Analytics Lab in 2020 and director of the Analytics Ph.D. Program in 2021.[8] In 2026, he was appointed director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and deputy director of the Data, AI, and Computing Initiative.[9]

Awards and honors

In 2010, they received the MIS Quarterly Paper of the Year award for "Detecting Fake Websites: The Contribution of Statistical Learning Theory", followed by the Best Information Systems Publications Award from the Association for Information Systems in 2011. They became a Senior Member of the IEEE in 2014. In 2019, they were recognized with the Information Systems Society Design Science Award from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, and in 2021 received the Information Systems Research Best Paper Award from INFORMS.
In 2025, they were honored with the All-Faculty Team Award from the University of Notre Dame, became an ACM Distinguished Member, and received the Information Systems Society Distinguished Fellow Award from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. In 2026, they received the IEEE Big Data Security Senior Research Award.

In 2008, Ahmed Abbasi and Hsinchun Chen co-authored "CyberGate: A Design Framework and System for Text Analysis of Computer Mediated Communication" in MIS Quarterly and "Writeprints: A Stylometric Approach to Identity-Level Identification and Similarity Detection in Cyberspace" in ACM Transactions on Information Systems. In 2010, Abbasi, Zhu Zhang, David Zimbra, Hsinchun Chen, and Jay F. Nunamaker Jr. published "Detecting Fake Websites: The Contribution of Statistical Learning Theory" in MIS Quarterly. Abbasi, Chad C. Albrecht, Anthony Vance, and James V. Hansen published "MetaFraud: A Meta-learning Framework for Detecting Financial Fraud" in MIS Quarterly in 2012. In 2018, Abbasi, Yilu Zhou, Shasha Deng, and Pengzhu Zhang authored "Text Analytics to Support Sense-making in Social Media: A Language-Action Perspective" in MIS Quarterly.
Abbasi co-authored "Don't Mention It? Analyzing User-generated Content Signals for Early Adverse Event Warnings" with Jingjing Li, Donald Adjeroh, Mary Abate, and Wei Zheng in Information Systems Research in 2019. In 2021, Abbasi, David Dobolyi, Anthony Vance, and Fatemeh Mariam Zahedi published "The Phishing Funnel Model: A Design Artifact to Predict User Susceptibility to Phishing Websites" in Information Systems Research. Abbasi, Roger H. L. Chiang, and Jennifer Xu authored "Data Science for Social Good" in the Journal of the Association for Information Systems in 2023. In 2024, Abbasi, Jeffrey Parsons, Gautam Pant, Olivia Sheng, and Saonee Sarker published "Pathways for Design Research on Artificial Intelligence" in Information Systems Research. In 2025, Abbasi, Sriram Somanchi, and Ken Kelley published "The Critical Challenge of Using Large-scale Digital Experiment Platforms for Scientific Discovery" in MIS Quarterly.
