Bidyut Baran Chaudhuri (B B Chaudhuri / B. B. Chauduri, Bengali: বিদ্যুৎ বরণ চৌধুরী, born 1950) is an Indian computer scientist and artificial intelligence researcher.^[1,14] He is a senior computer scientist at Techno India University in West Bengal, India, where he is noted as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) according to Bengali Wikipedia and as an emeritus professor according to English Wikipedia.^[1] He is also associated with and adjuncted to the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), where he was a professor for approximately three decades.^[1] At ISI, Chaudhuri was the founding head of the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Unit, established in 1994, and served as a Jagadish Chandra Bose (J.C. Bose) Fellow and an Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) Distinguished Professor.^[1]

He was also the Vice-President of the Society for Natural Language Technology Research (SNLTR).^[2] An alumnus of the University of Calcutta and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, his primary research contributions are in the fields of computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition, and natural language processing, and he is recognized as a pioneer of Indian language script optical character recognition (OCR).^[3,4] His awards and honors include being elected an IAPR Fellow in 1998, an IEEE Fellow in 2001, a TWAS Fellow in 2011, receiving the Om Prakash Bhasin Award in 2011, and becoming an IEEE Life Fellow in 2016.

Bidyut Baran Chaudhuri earned his BSc (Hons) in 1969, BTech in 1972, and MTech degree in 1974 from the University of Calcutta, India, and received his PhD degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1980.^[5] He completed his postdoctoral work through a Leverhulme Overseas Fellowship at Queen's University in the United Kingdom during 1981–1982. He also worked as a visiting faculty at Tech University, Hannover during 1986–1987 as well as at the GSF Institute of Radiation Protection (now Leibnitz Institute), Munich in 1990 and 1992.

Bidyut Baran Chaudhuri was elected a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) "for contributions to pattern recognition, especially Indian language script OCR, document processing and natural language processing".^[5,6,7,8,4] He also became a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) "for contributions to character recognition and speech synthesis in Indian languages".^[5,6,7,8] Additionally, he is a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), the National Academy of Sciences (NASI), and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE).^[5,6,7,8,12] In 2011, he received the Om Prakash Bhasin Award for contributions in the field of electronics and information technology.^[5,6,7,8]

According to a study conducted by Stanford University, Chaudhuri ranks among the world's top 2% of scientists and the top 10 Indian AI scientists.^[11] He has also been featured as a top-10 machine learning researcher from India.^[11] Interviews regarding some of his works have also been reported and published in Indian newspapers.^[9,10,13]
