Felix Gers is a professor of computer science at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences.^[1] Known for his research in recurrent neural networks, he introduced the forget gate to the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network architecture together with Jürgen Schmidhuber and Fred Cummins.^[2,3] This modification of the original architecture has been shown to be crucial to the success of the LSTM at tasks such as speech and handwriting recognition.^[3,4,5]
