Francisco Herrera Triguero (born 1966 in Jódar, Jaén, Spain) is a Spanish professor, mathematician, and computer scientist who is an expert in computing and artificial intelligence.[1,2,8,9] His research focuses on artificial intelligence, data mining, and soft computing techniques such as evolutionary algorithms and fuzzy logic, with applications in decision-making and decision-making systems.[1,2] He serves as a full professor in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Granada and has held senior leadership roles at the Andalusian inter-university institute DaSCI (Data Science and Computational Intelligence).[5,3]

Early life and education

Francisco Herrera was born in Jódar, Jaén, in 1966. He earned a degree in Mathematics from the University of Granada in 1986, where he also completed his doctorate in Artificial Intelligence five years later.[10] He is a Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Granada and director of the Instituto Interuniversitario Andaluz en Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI), a consortium formed by the University of Granada and the Universidad de Jaén.[10] Since 2020, he has been a member of the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council of the Government of Spain.
His research focuses on the field of Soft Computing techniques, especially genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic, and their application in decision-making and data mining, and he leads the "Soft Computing y Sistemas de Información Inteligentes" research group.[11] He has published six academic books and one popular science book, Inteligencia Artificial, Inteligencia Computacional y Big Data (Universidad de Jaén, 2014). His awards and recognitions include the Premio Nacional de Informática 2010 in the Aritmel category from the Sociedad Científica Informática de España for his scientific contributions in Soft Computing and Data Mining, the XV Premio Andalucía de Investigación «Maimónides» 2014, and the Medalla de Andalucía 2017.[11] In 2019, he was appointed a member of the Real Academia de Ingeniería. From July 16, 2021, to June 27, 2023, he held the councilorship for "Ciencia, Innovación y Ciudad Inteligente" in the Ayuntamiento de Granada.

Academic career

He joined the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Granada, where he later became a full professor. He has worked in the fields of computer science and engineering.[1,6] Since 2018, he has been associated with the leadership of DaSCI, a research institute established by the universities of Granada and Jaén to promote research in data science and computational intelligence.[5]

Research

Herrera’s research has focused on soft computing, including evolutionary computation and fuzzy systems, as well as their application to data mining and intelligent decision-making systems.[2,7]
