Hussein A. Abbass (born 1969 in Cairo, Egypt) is an Egyptian and Australian artificial intelligence researcher and computer scientist, as well as a professor at the University of New South Wales, Canberra. He joined the university in 2000 and was appointed professor in 2007.[1] He is recognized for his research into the Australian Indigenous language Jingulu and its applications for artificial intelligence.[2,3,4]
Abbass is the founder and first editor of the IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence journal and was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 2020 for contributions to evolutionary learning and optimization.[5] He served as the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society's vice-president of technical activities from 2016 to 2019 and as President of the Australian Society for Operations Research between 2017 and 2019.[1] Additionally, he has served as a visiting fellow at Imperial College London (2003) and as a visiting professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (2005), the National Defence Academy of Japan (2013), and the National University of Singapore (2014).[1]

Hussain Abbass co-authored Dual Phase Evolution with David Green and Jing Liu, published by Springer in 2013 (ISBN 9781441984234). He also authored Computational Red Teaming, published by Springer in 2014 (ISBN 9783319082813). In 2018, Jing Liu, Hussain Abbass, and Kay Chen Tan published Evolutionary Computation and Complex Networks with Springer (ISBN 9783319600000). Additionally, Jiangjun Tang, David Green, and Hussain Abbass co-authored Simulation and Computational Red Teaming for Problem Solving, published by Wiley in 2019 (ISBN 9781441984234).
