Janusz Aleksander Kacprzyk (born 12 July 1947 in Warsaw, Poland) is a Polish engineer, mathematician, computer scientist, and artificial intelligence researcher.^[26,31] He is notable for his contributions to computational intelligence and artificial intelligence tools, including fuzzy sets, fuzzy logic, mathematical optimization, decision-making under uncertainty, decision theory, intuitionistic fuzzy sets, systems analysis, operations research, evolutionary computation, neural networks, control, and data analysis and mining, with applications in databases, database querying, information retrieval, information and communication technologies (ICT), and mobile robotics.^[26,31]

Associated with the Warsaw University of Technology, he holds the title of professor in technical sciences and computer science, and serves as the head of the Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he is a full member (elected in 2016, with academic degrees obtained in 1977, 1990, and professorship on 14 April 1997), and holds honorary doctorates from Óbuda University and Częstochowa University of Technology (30 March 2022).^[10] He currently serves as the president of the Polish Operational and Systems Research Society, was president of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA) from 2009 to 2011, and has been the vice-president of the Polish Information Processing Society (PTI) since 2018.

Kacprzyk is a foreign member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences (2007), the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (2013), the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters (2018), and the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (2019), as well as a member of Academia Europaea and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.^[1,2] He is a fellow or member of several professional bodies, including the IEEE, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET/IEPP), the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI/ECCAI), IFSA (IFAS), and the Mexican Society for Artificial Intelligence (SMIA), and was elected a Fellow of the International Core Academy of Sciences and Humanities in 2025.^[1,2,3] His recognitions include the 2013 annual IFSA Award, the IEEE Pioneer Award in Fuzzy Systems, and the WAC Medal.

Janusz Kacprzyk was born on July 12, 1947 in Warsaw. In 1970, he graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology at the Faculty of Electronics with an M.Sc. in automatic control and computer science. In 1977, he obtained a Ph.D. in systems analysis, and later received his habilitation (D.Sc.) in computer science in 1990 according to Polish Wikipedia, or in 1991 according to English Wikipedia.^[26,4] On April 14, 1997, he was awarded the title of full professor, conferred by the President of the Republic of Poland.^[26,4]

As of 2018, Kacprzyk is a professor of computer science at the Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, at the Warsaw School of Information Technology (WIT), and at Chongqing Three Gorges University in Wanzhou, China.^[5] He also works at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków.^[5] He is an honorary foreign professor at the Department of Mathematics, Yili Normal University in Xinjiang, China, as well as a part-time professor of automatic control at the Polish Industrial Institute of Automation and Measurements (PIAP) and a part-time professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Tadeusz Kościuszko Kraków University of Technology. Kacprzyk has also been a frequent visiting professor in the US, Italy, the UK, Mexico, China, and Japan.^[4,5]

As of April 2018, he has authored 6 books, edited or co-edited over 100 volumes of scientific works, and authored or co-authored approximately 550 scientific papers. He is the editor-in-chief of 7 book series at Springer (Springer Science+Business Media, formerly Springer Verlag) and of two journals, and serves on the editorial boards of approximately 40 scientific journals.

Professor Kacprzyk has been a lifelong fellow of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA) since 1997 and a fellow of the IEEE since 2006. He is the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding academic and scientific achievements, among which is the Medal of the 70th Anniversary of Polish Informatics awarded by the PTI Chapter. In 2006, he received both the Kaufmann Prize and Gold Medal for pioneering works on the application of fuzzy logic in economics and management and the IEEE CIS Pioneer Award for pioneering works on multistage fuzzy control (fuzzy dynamic programming). In 2007, he received the Pioneer Award of the Silicon Valley Section of IEEE CIS for contributions to granular computing and computing with words, and was elected a foreign member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences (awarded in May 2008). In 2010, he was awarded the Medal of the Polish Neural Network Society for exceptional contributions to the advancement and development of computational intelligence in Poland.

In September 2013, he received the IFSA Award for outstanding academic contributions and lifetime achievement in the field of fuzzy systems, followed by his election in October 2013 as a foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In August 2014, he was awarded the World Automation Congress Lifetime Award for contributions in soft computing and was elected a member of Academia Europaea in the Informatics section. He became a fellow and permanent honorary member of the Mexican Society of Artificial Intelligence in September 2015. In January 2016, he was elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (Class 6 - Technical and Environmental Sciences), and in September 2016, he received the Award of the International Neural Network Society – Indian Chapter for Outstanding Contributions to Computational Intelligence. He was elected to honorary membership in the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology in June 2016 (awarded in September 2017), became a foreign member of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters in February 2018 (elected in December 2017), and was named a foreign member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB) in December 2019.

Kacprzyk has also received several honorary doctorates, including from Széchenyi István University in Győr, Hungary (September 2014), and Óbuda University in Budapest, Hungary (November 2016). In 2017, he was conferred Doctor Honoris Causa degrees by Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland in April and by 'Prof. Asen Zlatarov' University in Burgas, Bulgaria in May. On March 30, 2022, he received an honorary doctorate from the Czestochowa University of Technology.
