João Pavão Martins is a Full Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon). He holds a Licentiate degree in mechanical engineering (1976) from Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon), as well as a Master of Science in computer science (1979) and a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence (1983) from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was one of the figures behind the creation of the Computer Science and Engineering degree at Instituto Superior Técnico in 1988 and one of the founders of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the institute in 1998.
