Joaquim Armando Pires Jorge (born June 3, 1959, in Lisbon, Portugal) is a Portuguese computer scientist and university professor whose work spans virtual reality, computer graphics, human–computer interaction, and artificial intelligence.[1] He completed his undergraduate studies (BSEE / Licenciatura) at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, and earned his MSc and PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1995 under Ephraim Glinert with the dissertation "Parsing adjacency grammars for calligraphic interfaces".
Jorge is a University Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, a senior researcher at INESC-ID, and holds the UNESCO Chair on Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality.[2,3] He is also an adjunct professor at Victoria University of Wellington (since 2022) and an honorary invited professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (since 2022).[7,6] Elected to the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors in 2023, he was voted President-Elect of the IEEE Computer Society for 2026 and will serve as President in 2027.[4,5] He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal Computers & Graphics.
His honors and recognitions include being an IEEE Fellow (2025), IEEE Senior Member, IEEE Distinguished Contributor, IEEE Distinguished Visitor, ACM Distinguished Member, ACM Distinguished Speaker, Fellow of the Eurographics Association (2010), and a Membre Libre of the Académie nationale de chirurgie (French National Academy of Surgery).[25,26,27]
Biography
Joaquim Jorge holds the UNESCO Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality, is a University Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Instituto Superior Técnico of the Universidade de Lisboa, and is a senior researcher at INESC-ID.[7] An elected member of the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors since 2023, he also serves as the President-Elect of the society.[3,4,5] He has been an Adjunct Professor at Victoria University Wellington (VUW) since 2022 and is an Honorary Visiting Professor at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (2022).[3,4,5] He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Computers & Graphics (Elsevier). Additionally, he is a Fellow of the Eurographics Association, a Distinguished Member and Distinguished Speaker of the ACM, a Distinguished Visitor and Distinguished Contributor of the IEEE, and a Membre Libre of the Académie nationale de chirurgie (French National Academy of Surgery).[28]
Education
Joaquim Jorge graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the Instituto Superior Técnico de Lisboa in 1984.[32] He completed his M.Sc. in 1992 and Ph.D. in 1995 in Computer and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.[8,32] His dissertation, Parsing Adjacency Grammars for Calligraphic Interfaces, was supervised by Ephraim Glinert.[8,9,33] He obtained his Agregação (habilitation) degree from Instituto Superior Técnico in 2002.
Career and Research
Shortly after completing his doctorate, Joaquim Jorge joined the newly created Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Departamento de Engenharia e Informática) at Instituto Superior Técnico as an assistant professor. After completing the Agregação exams in 2002, he was promoted to associate professor in 2004 and to full professor in 2008. He served as a visiting or guest professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt (1999–2000), in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary (2006–2018), and at the Technical University of Vienna (2013–2014). Since 2022, he has also been an adjunct professor at Victoria University of Wellington and an honorary invited professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.
From 2015 to 2019, Jorge served as an elected Executive Member of the ACM Europe Council.[10,11,12] He was Journal Papers Chair of IEEE VR 2020 (held virtually in April 2020) and Conference Co-chair for IEEE VR 2021 (held virtually in Lisbon in April 2021) and IEEE VR 2022 (held in April 2022).[11,12,10] He also co-chaired the Scientific Program of Eurographics 2016, held in Lisbon.[13] In addition, he is a member of the Editorial Board of Computer Graphics Forum and serves on the editorial boards of the Springer Virtual Reality Journal and the Springer/Nature HCIS Book Series.[34]
Jorge's research focuses on human–computer interaction, sketch-based interfaces, and immersive technologies. He has published more than 300 scholarly works, including peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, and books, and has supervised 17 doctoral students (Ph.D. theses) through 2023.[14] He co-edited the book Digital Anatomy (Springer, 2022) and authored a widely cited survey article, Sketch-Based Modeling: A Survey in Computers & Graphics (2009).[21,20] His bibliographic records are listed in Scopus, DBLP, and ORCID.[17] English Wikipedia reports that his publications have received more than 12,000 citations with an h-index of 56, while Portuguese Wikipedia states that his works have been cited more than 10,000 times and that he has at least 53 papers with 53 or more citations according to Google Scholar.[1,17] He ranks among the world's top 2% of computer scientists according to a Stanford University study, and is recognized among the leading computer science researchers in Portugal (spanning 2022–2024 according to English Wikipedia, and 2022 and 2023 according to Portuguese Wikipedia).[16,15]
