Pascal Hitzler is a German American computer scientist specializing in the Semantic Web and Artificial Intelligence. At Kansas State University, he is a University Distinguished Professor, the endowed Lloyd T. Smith Creativity in Engineering Chair, one of the Directors of the Institute for Digital Agriculture and Advanced Analytics (ID3A), and Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDS). Additionally, he is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Semantic Web journal, the Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence journal, and the IOS Press book series Studies on the Semantic Web. He completed his doctoral work in 2001 at the National University of Ireland, University College Cork, with the dissertation "Generalized Metrics and Topology in Logic Programming Semantics" under Anthony Karel Seda.

Hitzler received a Diplom in Mathematics from the University of Tübingen in Germany in 1998. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from the National University of Ireland, University College Cork, received in 2001.

From 1992 to 1998, Hitzler studied Mathematics and Computer Science at the Eberhard-Karl University of Tübingen in Germany and graduated with a Diplom thesis on "Topology and Logic Programming Semantics". From 1999 to 2001, he was a PhD student at the Department of Mathematics at the National University of Ireland, University College Cork, graduating with a dissertation on "Generalized Metrics and Topology in Logic Programming Semantics." Between 2001 and 2004, he served as a postdoctoral researcher at the International Center for Computational Logic at TU Dresden. From 2004 to 2009, he worked at the Institute for Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, first as Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (as postdoc) and then as Akademischer Rat. During his tenure at Wright State University, where he was an endowed NCR Distinguished Professor, he received the title of 2018 Brage Golding Distinguished Professor of Research.

Hitzler co-founded several series of academic meetings, including the Workshop on Neural-Symbolic Learning and Reasoning (NeSy, since 2005, which became a conference in 2023), the Web Reasoning and Rule Systems Conference (RR, since 2006), the Workshop on Applications of Semantic Technologies (AST, 2007-2011), and the U.S. Semantic Technologies Symposium (us2ts, since 2018). He also contributed to steering the Workshop on Ontology Design & Patterns (WOP, since 2017). Additionally, Hitzler is one of the authors of the OWL 2 Web Ontology Language Primer, which is a W3C standard.

Hitzler has published several books as author and editor, including the textbook "Foundations of Semantic Web Technologies", which received an Outstanding Academic Title award in 2010 from Choice Magazine. In October 2020, a scientometric publication in PLOS Biology listed him among the top 1% of scientists worldwide in Artificial Intelligence & Image Processing. At the 2020 International Semantic Web Conference, he and his co-authors received the SWSA Ten-Year Award from the Semantic Web Science Association for the publication "Ontology Alignment for Linked Open Data" (authored by Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma, and Peter Z. Yeh).

Pascal Hitzler co-edited Perspectives of Neural-Symbolic Integration with Barbara Hammer, published in 2007 by Springer as Volume 77 of the Studies in Computational Intelligence series. In 2008, he co-authored the Springer textbook Semantic Web. Grundlagen with Markus Krötzsch, Sebastian Rudolph, and York Sure. He and Henrik Schärfe edited Conceptual Structures in Practice, published in 2009 in Boca Raton, Florida, as part of the Chapman & Hall/CRC studies in informatics series. In 2010, Hitzler, Krötzsch, and Rudolph published Foundations of Semantic Web Technologies in the Textbooks in Computing series with Chapman and Hall/CRC Press, which was later released in 2013 as 语义Web技术基础 by Tsinghua University Press. Also in 2010, he co-authored Mathematical Aspects of Logic Programming Semantics with Anthony K. Seda in the Chapman and Hall/CRC Press Studies in Informatics series. In 2011, Synchron Verlag in Heidelberg published Logik und Logikprogrammierung Band 2: Aufgaben und Lösungen, co-authored by Steffen Hölldobler, Sebastian Bader, Bertram Fronhöfer, Ursula Hans, Pascal Hitzler, Markus Krötzsch, and Tobias Pietzsch.
