Takayuki Ito (伊藤 孝行; born May 1, 1972) is a Japanese computer scientist specializing in artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems. According to English Wikipedia, he is from Komaki, Japan, whereas Japanese Wikipedia states he is from Shikatsu Town, Aichi Prefecture (currently Kitanagoya City). In 2000, he completed his doctoral work titled "Study of Multiagent Cooperation Mechanisms for Decision Support and their Applications".

Ito worked as an assistant professor in the computer science department of Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology from 2001 until 2003, served as an associate professor in the computer science department of Nagoya Institute of Technology from 2006 to 2014, and worked as a full professor there from 2014 to 2020.^[1] He also served as chair of the department from 2016 to 2018 and as director of the NITech Artificial Intelligence Research Center at Nagoya Institute of Technology. From October 2020, he has been working as a full professor of computer science at the Department of Social Informatics, Kyoto University, and also serves as Chief Technology Officer at AgreeBit Inc., Japan.^[2,4]

From 1999 to 2001, he was a research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). From 2000 to 2001, he served as a visiting researcher at the University of Southern California/Information Sciences Institute. He was an associate professor at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) from April 2001 to March 2003. He then worked at the Nagoya Institute of Technology, serving as an associate professor from April 2004 to March 2013 and as a professor from April 2014 to September 2020. Since October 2020, he has been a professor at Kyoto University.

From 2005 to 2006, he was a visiting researcher at both the Division of Engineering and Applied Science at Harvard University and the Center for Coordination Science at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He returned to the MIT Sloan School of Management from 2008 to 2010 as a visiting researcher at the Center for Collective Intelligence. From 2017 to 2018, he was an invited researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Center of AIST, Japan. In industry, he has served as the CTO of AgreeBit, inc. as an entrepreneur since March 5, 2019.

Ito's work focuses on advancing AI and multiagent systems for social good, with a track record of building pioneering conversational AI systems for social impact such as Collagree and D-Agree. His research focuses on fundamental problems in computational game theory, machine learning, automated and intelligent agents, and multi-agent interactions driven by these topics, ensuring a virtuous cycle of research and real-world applications.^[5] His main research interests include Multi-Agent Systems, Group Decision Support Systems, Collective Intelligence, Crowd Intelligence, Consensus, Automated Negotiation, Computational Mechanism Design, Game Theory, Auction Theory, Intelligent Agents, Distributed Artificial Intelligence, Agent-mediated Electronic Commerce, Information Economics, and Reasoning under Uncertainty.^[3]

He is a lead principal investigator of the CREST project.^[6] Ito and his team also provided the first large scale discussion support system based on agent support, which deployed in many countries such as Japan, Indonesia, and Afghanistan.^[3] His recent research questions include: "Why can people make agreements and consensus?" and "What is consensus?"

Ito received numerous honors, including the Super Creator Award of 2004 IPA Exploratory Software Creation Projects, the 2005 Best Paper Award from the Japan Society for Software Science and Technology, the Best Paper Award of AAMAS2006, the Best Paper Award in the 66th annual conference of the Information Processing Society of Japan, the Nagao Special Research Award of the Information Processing Society of Japan in 2007, the Young Scientists' Prize from The Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology in 2007, the Prize for Science and Technology (Research Category) from The Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology in 2013, and the JSPS Prize in 2014. He serves as the Principal Investigator of the Japan Cabinet Funding Program for Next Generation World-Leading Researchers (NEXT Program). He is a board member of IFAAMAS, an Executive Committee Member of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Intelligent Informatics, the PC-chair of AAMAS2013 and PRIMA2009, General-Chair of PRIMA2014, and has served as an SPC/PC member for many top-level conferences, including IJCAI, AAMAS, ECAI, and AAAI. His main research interests include multi-agent systems, intelligent agents, group decision support systems, agent-mediated electronic commerce, and software engineering on offshoring. Additionally, he has several companies that handle web-based systems and enterprise distributed systems.

He graduated from Aichi Prefectural Nishiharu High School and later graduated from the Department of Intelligence and Information Systems in the Faculty of Engineering at the Nagoya Institute of Technology. He went on to complete the doctoral program at the Graduate School of Engineering at the Nagoya Institute of Technology, receiving a Doctor of Engineering degree.^[7] After serving as an Assistant Professor (Associate Professor) at the Research Center for Knowledge Science at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) and as a Professor in the Department of Industrial Strategy Engineering at the Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya Institute of Technology, he became a Professor at the Graduate School of Informatics at Kyoto University.^[8]

He led creative research in multi-agent systems. He received the 2013 JSPS Prize, the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in the Research Category, the 2015 Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence Achievement Award, and the 2020 Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence Distinguished Service Award.^[9,10] In 2023, he was appointed as an Associate Member of the Science Council of Japan.
