Vladimir Ivanovich Gorodetsky (born November 27, 1937, in Leningrad, Soviet Union) is a Soviet and Russian scientist, artificial intelligence researcher, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor of computer science, and Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.^[1] Recognized as a leading specialist on problems of artificial intelligence and tools for developing multi-agent application systems, he serves as a Senior Researcher in the Intelligent Systems Laboratory of the St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Science (SPIIRAS).^[1] He graduated from the Military Air Force Engineer Academy in St. Petersburg (1960) and the Mathematical and Mechanical Department of St. Petersburg State University (1970), earning his Ph.D. degree in 1967 and his Doctor of Technical Sciences degree in 1973 in the field of "Space Vehicle Optimal Control".^[2] His academic activities are also associated with the Mozhaiski Military Space Academy, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, and A. L. Tulupev.

Gorodetsky has authored over 250 main publications spanning multi-agent systems, optimal control system theory, orbital mechanics, applied statistics, planning, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence, knowledge discovery from databases, data and information fusion, digital image steganography, and computer network security.^[3] He is a member of the Russian Association for Artificial Intelligence, a retired Colonel, a Master of Sports of the USSR, and a veteran of the mountaineering movement of Russia.

Vladimir Gorodetsky (V. I. Gorodetsky) was born on 27 November 1937 in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg). He graduated in 1960 from the Faculty of Engineering at the Leningrad Air Force Engineering Academy, and in 1970 from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at Leningrad State University. From 1960 to 1963, he served in units of the Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN). In 1964, he entered postgraduate military studies at the Department of Autonomous Control Systems, upon completion of which in 1967 he defended his Candidate's dissertation.

From 1967 to 1988, while serving at the A. F. Mozhaysky Military Engineering Academy, he held research and teaching positions as Senior Researcher of the Research Laboratory of Aircraft Control Systems (1967–1972), Lecturer at the Department of Mathematical Support (1972–1975), and Senior Researcher and Head of the NIL-14 Group (1975–1988). In 1973, he defended his doctoral dissertation on control optimization problems. From 1988 to 2018, he was Head of the Laboratory and Chief Researcher of the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems at the St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPIIRAN). Concurrently, from 1997 to 1999, he served as Head of the Department of Information Technologies in Education at the A. I. Herzen St. Petersburg State Pedagogical University.

His areas of scientific interest include optimal control theory, celestial mechanics, applied statistics, planning and scheduling, artificial intelligence and decision making, multi-agent systems, self-organizing agent networks, tool systems, intelligent data processing and machine learning, efficient big data processing algorithms, semantic technologies, information fusion from heterogeneous sources, distributed and P2P learning, computer security, systems with uncertainty, recommender systems, transportation and production logistics, steganography, and models of collective robot behavior. V. I. Gorodetsky has published more than 360 works, including over 100 in foreign cited publications, as well as nine monographs and textbooks. Since 2000, he has also published a number of books in the field of artificial intelligence with foreign publishers. He has served as a co-editor of 12 volumes of the "Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence" and "Lecture Notes in Computer Science" series (2001–2015) and as a guest editor of the 2009 special issue "Agent and data Mining Interaction" for the IEEE Intelligent Systems journal.

He is a member of the Russian and European Associations for Artificial Intelligence, IEEE, IEEE Computer Science, the International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multi-agent Systems (IFAAMAS), and the International Society of Information Fusion (ISIF). Additionally, he is an editorial board member of the international journal "Data Science and Analytics" (Springer) and the Russian journal "Ontology of Designing".

Gorodetsky delivered lecture courses for senior undergraduate and graduate students at the A. F. Mozhaysky Military Engineering Academy and the Herzen Pedagogical University covering applied mathematics, probability theory, mathematical statistics, optimization and decision-making theory, mathematical programming and queuing theory, programming languages, databases, applied algebra and discrete mathematics, formal grammars and logic, and Internet technologies. He has also lectured at the State University of New York in the United States.

He is keen on mountain tourism and mountaineering, having completed about eight mountain treks of the highest category and more than 75 ascents. From 1968 to 1988, he served as a coach for the mountaineering section of the A. F. Mozhaysky VIKA. He was the head of the USSR Armed Forces national team at the USSR Championships in 1981, 1982, and 1986. He completed his most recent ascent in the winter of 2010.^[4]
